SUMMARY:

The reduction of dietary diversity in urban settings contrasts with Brazil’s extensive food biodiversity, where neglected foods, such as non-conventional edible plants, fungi, and other underutilized species, remain marginalized in everyday practices. This study investigates how participation in community gardens relates to the social construction of familiarity with these foods, articulating the concept of food neophobia as a disposition potentially shaped by collective experiences. A mixed-methods design is employed, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative phase compares levels of food neophobia among individuals with different degrees of experience in community gardens, using the Food Neophobia Scale and a continuous experience score. The qualitative phase, based on semi-structured interviews, examines the social mechanisms mediating potential dispositional changes, including repeated exposure, social modeling, commensality, and collective learning. The study hypothesizes that greater intensity and duration of garden participation are associated with lower levels of food neophobia and higher familiarity with neglected foods. By integrating statistical analysis and sociological interpretation, the research contributes to understanding eating behavior as a socially constructed phenomenon and provides evidence to inform food education policies and biodiversity promotion strategies in urban contexts.
