SUMMARY:

Contemporary Brazilian Black cinema constitutes a space of symbolic dispute and meaning-making capable of confronting structural racism and expanding the visibility of historically marginalized Afro-Brazilian experiences. This research analyzes how feature films directed by Black filmmakers between 2020 and 2023 contribute to the construction of an anti-racist consciousness and to the valorization of racialized identities, considering audiovisual production as a social practice that generates memory, recognition and belonging. An exploratory qualitative approach is adopted through a multiple case study of the films Medida Provisória (2020), Cabeça de Nêgo (2020), Doutor Gama (2021), Pureza (2022) and Ó Paí, Ó 2 (2023). The methodology combines film analysis and literature review, enabling the interpretation of narrative, aesthetic and discursive strategies mobilized by the works. The theoretical framework engages with studies on structural racism, representativeness, racial identity and the sociology of cinema, emphasizing the intersection of race, class, gender and territory in the constitution of social experiences. The analysis reveals the construction of counter-hegemonic representations that reposition Black characters from stereotyped roles to narrative protagonism, fostering empathy, recognition and critical reflection. By addressing historical inequalities and practices of resistance, these films challenge social memory and broaden public debate on racial justice. These productions affirm cinema as a tool of symbolic and pedagogical intervention, contributing to the strengthening of anti-racist imaginaries and to the renewal of studies on culture and race relations in contemporary Brazil.
