SUMMARY:

The Barreirinhas Basin occupies the central portion of the Brazilian Equatorial Margin and presents along its extension, two segments: a transform segment of E-W direction controlled by the Romanche Fracture Zone and a divergent segment of NW-SE direction. This central sector of the Brazilian equatorial margin presents a range of structures on the deep ocean floor that are products of a plurality of processes in a complex geological and oceanographic context. The present study aims to investigate the occurrence of these features or shallow structures of the later Miocene in the context of deep water (slope - basin) in both the transforming and divergent segments, to understand which oceanic processes are related and to point out whether the Romanche fracture zone has been in continuous tectonic activity until recent, playing a role in the triggering of gravitational collapse processes on the slope of the Barreirinhas Basin. The dataset comprise bathymetric profiles, 2D seismic reflection sections, and well log calibrated to seismic to characterize the structures of the Late Miocene to Recent. Preliminary results indicate that there is a diversity of features on the deep-sea floor in both Barreirinhas segments that are results from mass movements on the slope, through erosion by canyons/channels and ravines, sediment deposition by bottom currents to escape and fluid migration forming mounds and pockmarks. The integrated analysis of the data also suggests that mudslides induced by the Romanche fracture zone are possibly associated with fault reactivations.
