SUMMARY:

The installation of continental rifts in previously deformed basement lithospheres is commonly linked to the process of structural inheritance. This research aims to contribute to the understanding of the potential influence of the Precambrian basement structural framework on the development of faults in the synrift section of the western emerged portion of the Potiguar basin. Genetically related to the Neocomian basins that are part of the Northeast Brazilian rift system, the Potiguar rift comprises the northern portion of the Cariri-Potiguar trend, with sedimentary infill related to three tectonic stages (synrift, post-rift, and drift). Based on the analysis of 3D seismic volumes from the extreme SW of the Potiguar rift, the framework of the homonymous basin, the main objective is to analyze the interrelationships between pre-existing structures and those related to the syn-rift phase. The seismic interpretation employed the application of seismic filters and attributes in order to improve the signal to-noise ratio and enhance structures. The structural framework of the study area exhibits parallel segments of the Apodi and Baixa Grande faults, both sharing a similar structural style (displacement and NW-SE orientation) along much of their southeastern extent. The variation in dip intensity reveals a change in the Apodi fault, which becomes a detachment surface coincident with the seismic horizon of the basement. In turn, this component reveals the asymmetrical trough morphology of the Apodi hemi-graben, with a depocenter oriented ESE and a set of antithetic and synthetic subsidiary intrabasement faults arranged along the flexural margin in a step faulting pattern, while the configuration of the opposite margin is typified by edge faults mediated by a relay ramp. Furthermore, fault-induced structures were interpreted, such as drag folds or folds formed by the bending of faults
