SUMMARY:

This work presents the initial results of the bathymetric mapping of the Brazilian continental slope adjacent to Caiçara do Norte and São Miguel do Gostoso (RN). The study area, located in the Potiguar Basin, is one of the least explored regions along the Brazilian Equatorial Margin (MEB), with significant gaps in high-resolution morphological data. To enhance our understanding, systematic mapping was carried out using multibeam bathymetry. The results revealed depths ranging from 61 meters (near the platform) to 2,749 meters (in the distal region of the slope), covering an area approximately 25 km wide. The area is characterized by the presence of submarine canyons, which were classified into two groups based on their geomorphological relationship with the platform and the slope: Group 1 – canyons incised into the platform, featuring steep heads and a perpendicular orientation to the continental margin; and Group 2 – canyons carved exclusively into the slope. In addition, circular topographic depressions were identified along the slope. The bathymetric analysis demonstrated that the canyon heads correspond to zones of the greatest slope and concavity, indicating intense erosional activity, whereas the thalwegs exhibit flat or gently convex patterns, suggesting less pronounced erosional processes. This study provides the first detailed description of the region's geomorphology, highlighting the complexity of features such as canyons and depressions, and offers essential insights for the sustainable planning of offshore activities in northeastern Brazil, as well as for the assessment of geological risks in deep-water environments.
