SUMMARY:

The Parnaíba River Delta located in northeastern Brazil is one of the few examples of deltaic depositional system that still has its well preserved characteristics, which makes it increasingly the target of scientific research in various areas. The present work aims to investigate the evolution of the Parnaíba delta over time in the Holocene period. For this, 10 vibracore were collected in old mangrove forest, in active areas of tidal channels, and in supratidal swamp. The study comprised sedimentary and petrophysical analysis, as well as dating by radiocarbon method using the Mass Spectometry Accelerator (AMS) technique. The results obtained so far showed that the contents of organic matter and calcium carbonate present variations related to grain size. In fine, siltic-clayey sediments, organic matter and carbonate values tend to be higher. It was also possible to observe differences in the porosity profile related to burial grain time. Dating shows ages ranging from 4057± 22 BP to more recent ages (1950 AD). It is expected, from the integration, analysis and interpretation of the data to reconstruct the age and evolution of the current tidal system in the western and eastern margin of the Parnaíba delta.
