SUMMARY:

In the process of producing space, as a complex and evolving whole, past and present actions leave deep marks in various dimensions of reality, both politically and economically, as well as culturally. In this way, racial issues, as a set of relationships involving discrimination and violence against groups of human beings, mainly based on color and race, are reaffirmed as historical and geographical conditions in contemporary Brazil. In the case of Vitória da Conquista/BA, the city has a spatial arrangement with strong African influences, represented through black expression, which is gaining more significance in the peripheral areas of the urban space, mainly through the Candomblé terreiros and Umbanda houses. In view of the problem presented, the research is anchored in the following guiding question: how is the racial landscape configured in Vitória da Conquista/BA, considering the religious practices of the Candomblé terreiros and Umbanda houses? Based on this definition of the problem assumed for the development of the research, it is possible to raise the following secondary questions: a) how is the racial landscape spatially expressed in Vitória da Conquista/BA? b) how do the Candomblé Terreiros and Umbanda Houses establish processes of spatial constitution and an inseparable relationship between the past and present of Vitória da Conquista/BA? c) How do the Candomblé Terreiros and Umbanda Houses reaffirm themselves as historical-territorial organizations that fight to overcome injustices and inequalities in the present time-space? The general objective is to analyze the configuration of the racial landscape in Vitória da Conquista/BA, based on the religious practices of the Candomblé Terreiros and Umbanda Houses. The research hypothesis is based on the argument that the city of Bahia presents a racial landscape that is the result of an African matrix reality and that composes and intertwines marks of a historical-geographical process of survival, resistance, and affirmation of black ancestry, mainly through the Candomblé Terreiros and Umbanda Houses. For the development of empirical research, field research will be conducted in Candomblé and Umbanda Terreiros, with the aim of interviewing residents and understanding the specificities of each location, the scales of influence of each space, learn how the studied area is structured, map and photograph its uses to identify them in relation to the various subjects who appropriate such locations. Authors such as Moura (2003), (2020), Aguiar (1999), (2003), Bastide (1946), among others, form the theoretical basis of the thesis. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with sectors of the municipal government of Vitória da Conquista/BA. The interviews will be conducted from the perspective of Oral History, as proposed by Portelli (1997). Cartographic bases will also be developed in the work. With regard to the empirical question, field research has not yet been carried out, due to the demands of the ethics council, as the work is in its initial phase. In this way, this racial landscape is presented through fragments in space, where the black population, mostly female, establishes in religion processes of spatial constitution that are inseparable between the past and the present.
