SUMMARY:

The Rio Grande do Norte portion of the Seridó River Basin, located in the Brazilian semiarid region, is the focus of this research. With an area of 6,465.08 km², it partially or fully covers 26 municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte, being the largest sub-basin of the Piranhas-Açu River and the largest Hydrological Planning Unit (UPH) in the same basin, according to the National Water Agency (ANA). Since its formation, the region has faced constant processes of exploitation of natural resources and prolonged periods of drought, resulting in harmful and often irreversible environmental impacts, with a large part of its urban centers and emerging socioeconomic activities on the banks of the Seridó River. The main objective of this study is to perform a geoecological compartmentalization of the northern Rio Grande do Norte portion of the basin, proposing a zoning based on the potentialities, limitations and environmental status of the area. The research is based on the theoretical-methodological approach of Landscape Geoecology, structured in phases: organization and inventory, analysis, diagnosis and proposition. The applied geoecological perspective aims to understand landscape nuances as legacies of anthropo-natural interaction over time. To this end, an analysis of land use and occupation was carried out between 1993 and 2023 and this revealed 10 classes, systematized according to MapBiomas (2022) and SCUT (IBGE, 2013), including: Forest Formation, Savannah Formation, Grassland Formation, Pasture, Mosaic of Uses, Urban Area, Other Non-Vegeted Areas, Water Bodies, Other Temporary Crops and Other Perennial Crops. Additionally, the individualization of landscape units was carried out, emphasizing the physical-geographic regionalization, based on geomorphological features and cultural attributes. From this, the basin was divided into 6 Geoecological Units: Cristas do Seridó, Escarpas Serranas da Boa Vista, Morros da Borborema Potiguar, Planaltos Dourados, Plainície Fluvial do Seridó and Superfícies Aplanadas do Sertão. Each unit was investigated regarding its potentialities and limitations, providing a geoecological view of the natural framework of the region, that is, in an integrated manner. Based on this diagnosis, the next stages of the research will be developed, which will include the measurement of the environmental impacts of each unit, as well as the delimitation of its environmental status, culminating in the elaboration of a zoning that proposes measures of restriction, protection and sustainable conservation of the hydrographic basin.
