SUMMARY:

The process of urbanization, induced by different variables and agents, gains significant prominence when associated with the dynamics of capital accumulation. Accumulation, in turn, finds in urbanization and city formation one of its most efficient ways of reproducing itself, thus reflecting a dialectical process characterized by the combination of these two phenomena throughout history. The built environment is understood, in this context, as a crucial part of the dynamics of capitalist production and reproduction, serving as fixed capital in different productive chains within the city and being identified through structures such as factories, avenues, streets, water pipelines, power cables, schools and universities, corporate headquarters, among others. This thesis questions how the dynamics of urbanization and the formation of the built environment occur in Campina Grande-PB through capital accumulation. The general objective is to analyze the urbanization process in Campina Grande-PB induced by capital accumulation, through Accumulation Epicenters in the built environment. The hypothesis is that, in Campina Grande, capital accumulation develops through the occurrence of these Epicenters, making it possible to establish periodizations of the city's urbanization process, highlighting hierarchies, overlaps, continuities, and reconfigurations of the urban landscape. The theoretical approach of this study is based on Harvey (2005, 2013, 2014, 2020), who presents the notion of the built environment and the concept of fixed capital based on Marx (2013). Milton Santos (2014, 2017) complements our main approach with the concepts of fixed structures and flows, as well as the notion of events, which mark time (in periods) and space. The dialectical method is employed, emphasizing contradictions, continuities, and discontinuities inherent to the urban dynamics structured by events that drive new processes. Additionally, an empirical approach is taken, involving research and systematization of primary and secondary sources related to the reality of Campina Grande. As a methodological strategy for systematization, the periodization of the built environment is considered, being (re)structured in three phases, with the predominance of specific economic sectors: commerce (1910–1960), industry (1960–1980), and services (1980–present). Each sector encompasses unique events that reveal how the structures of this environment impose themselves, creating hierarchical dynamics that are fundamental for guiding the city's productive chains in each historical period. These structures are problematized as Accumulation Epicenters within the built environment, which serve as a guiding framework for the structuring of the thesis chapters.
