THE BRAILLE SYSTEM AS A PEDAGOGICAL ACCESSIBILITY TOOL IN THE REGULAR CLASSROOM
Visual Impairment. Braille System. Assistive Technology. Special Education. Teaching and Learning.
Visual impairment is characterized by the partial or total loss of vision, encompassing the field of sensory impairments. Although the inclusion of visually impaired students in schools has been increasing, the pedagogical practices adopted regarding reading and writing have not kept pace with this growth and neglect peculiarities inherent to these students that contribute to success in the learning process. In this sense, we propose this study, which aims to analyze the experience of visually impaired students in the final years of elementary school, gathering data on possible barriers and strategies used to promote the learning of these students during this school period. To this end, we will conduct qualitative research. In addition to a theoretical review on the topic of inclusion and the possibility of using tactile writing, the Braille system, in the regular classroom. The intention of this study is to contribute to broadening the discussion within schools regarding the inclusion of visually impaired students, with a proposed intervention through pedagogical training aimed at teachers, enabling them to expand the use of assistive technology, especially the Braille, thus contributing to the inclusion and learning of these students in mainstream schools.
