SUMMARY:

Distance Education (DE) has contributed to access to higher education, particularly in the Brazilian context, which has experienced significant growth in recent years, both in the number of available spots and in the number of courses. This growth has been driven by factors such as the development of Information and Communication Technologies, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the promotion of public education policies. However, dropout rates have also increased at a similar pace, demanding the development of strategies by tutors, who are primarily responsible for monitoring students in Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs). One of these environments is Moodle, adopted by UFRN for offering distance courses, as it consolidates a variety of resources and tools for course management. Nevertheless, the monitoring reports provided by Moodle in its basic configuration still present data in an isolated manner, requiring tutors to systematize the information to understand students’ situations and enable pedagogical interventions when necessary. Thus, there is a need for a resource that can be integrated into this system to support the creation of dashboards for student monitoring, aiming to reduce dropout rates. Considering the context of UFRN, this research seeks to answer the following question: How can a tutoring tool, based on Moodle, contribute to improving student monitoring in undergraduate distance courses at UFRN? To address this question, the general objective of the research is to develop a Moodle-based tool to monitor the academic trajectory of students in UFRN’s distance education courses. Specifically, the objectives are: a) to identify actions and tools in the literature that support tutoring in student monitoring in UFRN distance courses using Moodle; b) to model a student monitoring structure within Moodle; c) to validate the proposed solution for student monitoring in Moodle; and d) to develop a guide with instructions for tutors to monitor student performance using the developed tool. The theoretical framework of this research is based on presenting the DE scenario, addressing the understanding of VLEs and Moodle, as well as the role of pedagogical mediation and the evaluation of learning in this context. Additionally, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of the Umbrella Review type is presented, summarizing studies related to tutoring practices in student monitoring within DE. The adopted methodology follows a qualitative approach with an applied and exploratory nature. The procedures are guided by Design Science Research (DSR), structured in three cycles: Knowledge, for elaborating and evaluating theoretical conjectures; Design, for constructing the plugin; and Relevance, for assessing its acceptance and impact on tutoring activities. As expected results, a Moodle-integrated plugin and a manual, in the form of didactic material with instructions for its use, will be developed to streamline tutors’ pedagogical work, support student monitoring, and contribute to reducing dropout rates.
