HISTORY IN PLAY: A TEACHING GUIDE FOR USING RPGS IN EDUCATION
History Teaching. Role Playing Game. Educational Technologies.
This research investigates the use of Roleplaying Game (RPG) as an active methodology for teaching History in Basic Education, focusing on the creation of a didactic guide to assist teachers in applying this approach in the classroom. Based on the premise that traditional History teaching has limitations in terms of student engagement and participation, it proposes an alternative that promotes meaningful learning through simulation and the collective construction of narratives. The methodology includes a literature review, analysis of academic works on the educational use of RPGs, and an action research project conducted with 7th-grade students from a private school in Natal-RN, Brazil. The collected data indicate that RPG enhances student motivation, fosters historical thinking, and strengthens competencies outlined by the BNCC, such as historical empathy, argumentation, and source interpretation. The final product of this study is a structured didactic guide that supports teachers in designing and implementing narrative-based games grounded in historical content. The ongoing investigation provides evidence that RPG, when well planned, can be an innovative and effective tool for mediating historical knowledge and engaging students with school content.
