CYBERETHICS: INVESTIGATING THE ETHICAL DEVELOPMENT OF ADOLESCENTS IN THE USE OF DIGITAL INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES
Cyber-ethics; Digital Citizenship; Virtue Ethics; Online Incivility; Adolescents.
The growing use of Digital Information and Communication Technologies by adolescents has exposed this group to acts of online incivility, calling for an education that goes beyond deontological (rule-based) or utilitarian (consequence-focused) models and fosters the development of virtuous character. This study aims to analyse adolescents’ moral decisions when confronting online risks and acts of digital incivility in relation to Deontological and Utilitarian Moral Theories, while emphasising Virtue Ethics as a framework for ethical and responsible decision-making in digital environments. An exploratory, descriptive mixed-methods design is adopted. A semi-structured questionnaire will be administered, online or in print, to students from the 9th grade of Lower Secondary School to the 3rd year of Upper Secondary School in public and private schools across four Brazilian states. The instrument includes items on experiences of online incivility, such as cyberbullying, as well as a hypothetical moral dilemma. The study expects to quantify the prevalence and impacts of incivility, map the alignment of participants’ judgements with the ethical theories investigated, identify differences between school types, and validate indicators of cyber-wisdom that will inform the didactic material to be produced as the technical output of this research, thereby contributing to innovative pedagogical practices in Digital Citizenship Education and to the academic debate on ethics in cyberspace. It also seeks to generate evidence for preventive policies and to provide practical and theoretical support to the school community, emphasising the importance of moral reflection in the use of digital technologies. In addition, the study will contribute directly to the Programa de Pós-graduação em Inovação em Tecnologias Educacionais (PPgITE) by presenting a technical product aligned with its mission to train innovative professionals in this field.
