SUMMARY:

The transition to a society centered on scientific knowledge highlights the importance of understanding chemical principles. However, the traditional teaching of Chemistry, especially in Physical Chemistry, with its excessive focus on mathematical treatments, has led to learning difficulties for students. In response to these challenges, active methodologies, such as Project-Based Learning (PBL), have been proposed to engage students in practical and meaningful projects, addressing social issues and resulting in solutions to real problems. In this sense, the STEAM approach (acronym in English for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) expands these possibilities, in an interdisciplinary way, connecting curricular components with the student reality through investigative and creative projects. By integrating concepts and skills from the acronym fields of knowledge, students develop a deeper, more applicable understanding of knowledge. Therefore, this Master's research explores the STEAM approach in teaching Physical Chemistry in High School and starts with the following question: How can the STEAM approach help in the learning of Physical Chemistry for high school students? In view of the question, the following general objective was outlined: Analyze how the STEAM approach contributes to the learning of Physical Chemistry by second-year high school students. To achieve this, three specific objectives were established, namely: I) Map the main teaching strategies and practices based on the STEAM approach that have been used in the teaching of Physical Chemistry; II) Plan and implement pedagogical practice based on the STEAM Approach for the development of specific and general skills; III) Evaluate the impact of the STEAM approach in relation to Physical Chemistry concepts. To achieve the objectives, the study will be conducted through Action Research, in a private school in Natal. Throughout the research stages, the following will be used to generate data: documentary and bibliographical research, photo and video records, field diaries, student productions throughout the developed STEAM practice, as well as assessment rubrics, classroom observations and interviews with students. It is expected that the practice will have significant results in understanding the fundamental principles of Physical Chemistry. Based on the results of this research, an innovative Teaching Guide will be created that aims to maximize understanding of the fundamental concepts of the discipline.
