The treatment of cutaneous wounds is a dynamic process that depends on the progression of the healing phases. Currently, there are numerous types of wound dressings available on the market; however, bacterial resistance remains a significant challenge to be overcome. In this context, new technological approaches are necessary to optimize the healing process of this type of wound. Thus, the development of new materials is essential. In this study, cotton gauze was treated with a chitosan solution and subsequently impregnated with a solution of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The properties of the functionalized gauze were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, it’s in vitro antimicrobial activity was evaluated. The results obtained from SEM-EDS analyses showed that the silver nanoparticles were effectively loaded onto the surface of the cotton gauze. The *in vitro* antimicrobial activity of the gauze impregnated with AgNPs was confirmed against Staphylococcus aureus. This result indicates that the gauze functionalized with silver nanoparticles possesses antimicrobial properties, representing a promising alternative for the treatment and healing of cutaneous wounds. It is expected that this study will contribute to the application of silver in medical and healthcare procedures and encourage further research to consolidate its use as an antimicrobial agent.
