SUMMARY:

Microwave dielectric characterization has emerged as a promising approach for the rapid and non-destructive evaluation of materials, since changes in their properties can produce measurable variations in the electromagnetic response of resonant structures. In this context, this research aims to develop and evaluate novel planar microwave sensor architectures for the non-destructive dielectric characterization of solid and liquid materials, with applications in healthcare. The research encompasses different resonant configurations, developed and analyzed through electromagnetic modeling and simulation, fabrication, and experimental characterization, to investigate the interaction between the dielectric properties of the samples and the response of the devices. The performance of the proposed architectures is evaluated based on scattering parameters, sensitivity, and quality factor (Q), allowing their behavior to be compared and relevant characteristics to be identified under different sensing conditions. The numerical and experimental results obtained for the developed structures demonstrate their ability to respond to variations in the dielectric properties of the analyzed materials. Among the results achieved, coefficients of determination greater than 0.9983 were obtained for solid and liquid materials, with relative errors below 5%, indicating good agreement between numerical and experimental responses. The use of different architectures enables the investigation of sensing approaches suited to the specific characteristics of the samples and the requirements of each application. Potential applications include the assessment of hydration levels through the analysis of body fluids and the monitoring of changes in pharmaceutical products associated with their stability and storage conditions. Therefore, this research seeks to broaden the potential applications of planar microwave sensors in healthcare by exploring compact, sensitive, and non-destructive solutions for the characterization and monitoring of materials of clinical and pharmaceutical interest.
