SUMMARY:

Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the micro-region of Brejo Paraibano underwent significant transformations in its social and economic organization, accompanying different cycles of natural resource exploitation and agricultural activities. This historical context led to the emergence of a rural elite that chose manor houses as a means of expressing their values and social aspirations, materializing their cultural and symbolic codes in architecture. This study sought to understand the perceptions of rural residents about these architectural spaces, examining both everyday life and the sociocultural relationships established in the built environment. To this end, the main houses were treated as places of memory and belonging within the scope of rural architecture, adopting a methodology that integrated bibliographic and documentary research, fieldwork, interviews, and phenomenological analysis. The results show that these buildings transcend their original practical function to become spaces for identity construction and collective memory, converting themselves into repositories of traditional knowledge and social practices. The phenomenological approach proved fundamental to understanding the relationship between residents and the built environment, allowing us to identify how meanings are constructed through everyday practices and multisensory interaction with space. The research identified the materialization of the “spirit of place” through three interconnected dimensions: spatial organization that preserves traditional hierarchies, the conservation of objects with affective meaning, and cultural practices that redefine the uses of spaces. It is concluded that the rural architecture of Brejo Paraibano, particularly the main houses, constitutes a complex cultural system in which the material, symbolic,
and affective dimensions of living are articulated, revealed in a configuration that highlights the vitality of these environments as testimonies of ways of life in a constant process of cultural updating. It is hoped that this study will contribute to the advancement of knowledge and stimulate new research that articulates architectural preservation, the valorization of cultural identities, and sustainable territorial development, reaffirming the
importance of these buildings as living documents of the social and cultural history of the rural world.
