SUMMARY:

The study investigates the relationship between the sparse distribution of built-up areas and natural movement (which arises from the road configuration), using the spatial cut encompassing Joao Pessoa-PB, Natal-RN, and 23 other municipalities, including 160 localities of various sizes, as a case study. Expanding the observation scope beyond the edges of cities is essential for exploring small localities regarding their potential for expansion and the emergence of new settlements in areas that are still sparsely built. Furthermore, it contributes to the assessment of the effects of attraction and repulsion of human activities within a network of localities, considering the possibilities of movement and permanence in a broader area. The research also addresses how the road configuration favours or restricts route possibilities, including those that transcend localities and the regional cut, taking into account the confluence of international flows with local flows of people, goods, and commodities, in a process of weaving from the colonial period to contemporary tourism. The aim of assessing the relationships between the variations in movement generated by the road configuration and the patterns of locality distribution in space has led to an expanded conception of cities as economies of movement, in which patterns of locality distribution associated with the movement potential of the road network are recognised, and the confluences between destinations and paths interlinking the localities are evaluated. The Space Syntax Analysis (HILLIER; HANSON, 1984) was applied to the road network of the study area to construct a model for analysing the road configuration. The representation encompassed 142,731 road segments, using Normalised Angular Segment Analysis to assess ease of access and propensity for routes. The results reveal associations between movement patterns and built distribution, highlighting the differentiation between maximum route reaches. The findings confirm that the notion of cities as economies of movement is relevant in contexts of sparse occupation, contributing to elucidating the relationships between global and local aspects of spatial configuration.
