SUMMARY:

In Northeast Brazil, the Caatinga biome is the main regional source of woody raw material; however, as a dry forest ecosystem, its species tend to exhibit stem (bole) morphology that differs from that found in more humid forest formations, imposing specific constraints on wood harvesting, processing, and technological use. This doctoral thesis investigates the availability and yield of semi-arid timber species with a view to potential applications in building elements. To this end, an adapted forest inventory was conducted, incorporating dendrometry parameters associated with stem form—such as straightness, branching, and diameter—to estimate wood availability within Sustainable Forest Management Plans in two municipalities in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. In parallel, the yield of sawn timber was evaluated for two commercially traded, managed species, considering applications/ in furniture and civil construction. The results indicate that the available wood stock in sustainable forest management plans ranges from 4.45% to 6.75% of the estimated total volume. It is emphasized that this estimate is based predominantly on external criteria and does not include an assessment of the internal quality of the stem. Regarding processing, the volumetric yield coefficient (VYC) of the analyzed semi-arid species was found to be approximately 35% to 40%, evidencing the need to section logs into smaller pieces to maximize utilization of the/ square cross-sectional area. This requirement limits the use of solid wood for larger structural elements, favoring applications in small-dimension components and reinforcing the relevance of transformation strategies that expand the material’s applicability. Among the evaluated species, Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir showed the greatest difficulty in sawing, indicating higher operational complexity and greater susceptibility to processing losses. In summary, this thesis contributes by proposing an inventory procedure adapted to the morphological reality of the Caatinga for construction and by quantifying the limitations and potential of semi-arid wood yields, providing technical support for management planning, the processing chain, and the definition of applications that are more compatible with the biome’s typical geometric constraints.
