SUMMARY:

The growing need to reduce the carbon footprint of the construction sector, which is responsible for significant global CO₂ emissions, requires the search for constructive alternatives based on materials with lower environmental impact. In this context, timber emerges as a potentially strategic resource, especially when sourced from Tropical and Subtropical Seasonally Dry Forests (TSSDF), such as the Brazilian Caatinga. However, species from this biome, such as Mimosa tenuiflora (Jurema-preta) and Mimosa caesalpiniifolia (Sabiá), generally present small cross-sections and short lengths, which have historically limited their architectural and structural applications. Given this scenario, this research investigates how parametric modeling tools can enable the use of short-length and small-cross-section timber from the Caatinga in architectural applications. The study is developed through a literature review on architecture in hot and dry climates, the use of small-dimension timber in vernacular and contemporary construction, and the application of digital tools within the context of circular design. Based on this theoretical framework, a database will be organized, including typical dimensions, jointing techniques, and architectural functions. Drawing on this data, a parametric framework of the studied species will be developed for a design-oriented approach, using Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper as parametric modeling tools to build a virtual prototype. The research consists of the creation of this virtual prototype, aiming at material optimization and the exploration of structural possibilities. It is expected that parametric design may contribute to the integration of non-standardized materials into the design process, promoting greater use of local resources and strengthening construction strategies aligned with the principles of the circular economy.
