SUMMARY:

Street cinema in the city of Natal (RN) began in the 19th century. Throughout its trajectory, serving as more than mere exhibition venues, these spaces became significant hubs for sociability and leisure, reconfiguring the urban life of Natal’s residents until their disappearance or repurposing starting in the 1960s. Initially, the state capital was growing and taking shape based on various urban and social transformations inspired by European models of civility. This process was strongly encouraged by local elites, a group that frequently included intellectuals and the bourgeoisie. Thus, the cinema emerged as the ideal urban facility, becoming a point of convergence and an undeniable symbol of the desired modernity, technology, and progress. However, these establishments began to vanish from the landscape due to demolitions or changes in use. But how does the history of street cinemas in Natal correlate with urban transformations? It is hypothesized that this facility was inserted into the capital's modernization project, playing a role in altering social dynamics and guiding processes of territorial expansion. Thus, the spatial distribution of cinemas aligned with the growth of the urban fabric, starting in the city center and expanding to adjacent neighborhoods. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the repercussions of the emergence, consolidation, and extinction of these facilities on the socioeconomic dynamics of the urban space's modernization. To this end, documentary and bibliographic research was adopted, using newspapers and official documents to examine the arguments that promoted the implementation of the exhibition circuit. Furthermore, mapping and a photographic survey of the remaining buildings were carried out, identifying their location, state of conservation, and architectural characteristics. With the record of this iconographic and historical information, the research demonstrates, albeit partially, that throughout their historical trajectory, street cinemas in Natal exerted great influence on the construction of modernity and the city's territorial expansion, from their inception to their disappearance, evidenced even by the traces that still persist in the landscape.
