ABSTRACT

Background: Child violence is a severe public and social health problem. Primary Health Care (PHC) plays a strategic role in the early identification and management of maltreatment cases. However, gaps in professional training and technical insecurity contribute to underreporting and the perpetuation of this issue, highlighting the critical need for permanent education strategies. Objective: To evaluate the effects of a training program focused on the reception and management of children and adolescents victims of violence among PHC health professionals in the municipality of Jardim do Seridó-RN, Brazil. Methodology: A quasi-experimental, pre-test and post-test study with a single group was conducted involving 45 professionals from the PHC multidisciplinary team. The intervention consisted of a 12-hour face-to-face training course divided into three modules utilizing active learning methodologies. Data were collected before and after the intervention using a sociodemographic questionnaire, an adapted knowledge assessment questionnaire on child violence, the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SEbr-12), and the Jefferson Scale of Empathy. Results: Following the training, there was an increase in the proportion of participants with self-efficacy and empathy levels above the median, rising from 48.9% and 51.1%, respectively, to 68.9% in both domains. The self-perceived ability to recognize signs and symptoms of violence increased substantially (mean score rose from 6.28 to 7.57), as did the confidence to diagnose violence (mean score rose from 5.55 to 7.57). Regarding the educational strategies, the course was predominantly rated between "Very good" and "Excellent", and 100% of the participants stated they would recommend the intervention to other professionals. Conclusion: The educational intervention proved to be effective, fostering practical improvements in the knowledge, confidence, and empathy of health professionals when dealing with child and adolescent violence cases. The research led to the development of a reproducible Educational Product, structured as an In-Service Training Course Plan, designed to strengthen intersectoral actions and the protection network within PHC.
