SUMMARY:

This scoping review aimed to identify the teaching methodologies used for Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) education and their outcomes among undergraduate medical students. Methods: The study followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines and included studies addressing the question: “What teaching methodologies are used to teach POCUS to undergraduate medical students, and what are their outcomes?” The research question was developed according to the Population, Concept, Context (PCC) framework. The protocol was registered in the Open Science Framework (OSF) under number 10.17605/OSF.IO/WCB5P. The search was conducted in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, CINAHL, and ERIC databases. Results: Sixty studies were included, encompassing traditional teaching approaches—such as theoretical classes and laboratory practice—as well as innovative strategies, including intensive courses, interactive workshops, small-group learning, and active learning methodologies. The findings indicate that dynamic, student-centered approaches are the most effective, enhancing engagement, satisfaction, and the development of both technical and cognitive competencies. Conclusion: In POCUS education, the integration of diverse teaching strategies—such as theoretical instruction, supervised practice, short courses, educational technologies, and active learning—significantly contributes to improving clinical reasoning, decision-making, and diagnostic accuracy among medical students.
