SUMMARY:

Introduction: Nurses are key professionals in the provision of healthcare to patients with rare
syndromes. In the case of Berardinelli-Seip Syndrome (BSS), a rare autosomal recessive
metabolic disorder, it has been observed that nurses often lack the necessary knowledge to
provide qualified and safe clinical care. Objective: To develop and validate an online
continuing education course on BSS aimed at nurses. Method: This was a methodological
study for the creation of courseware for online learning, using a quantitative approach. The
research was conducted in three stages: (1) Development of a 30-hour self-instructional
course, including a course plan, lesson plans, scripts, and video lectures, as well as a Student
Guide, all hosted on the AVAProex/UFRN platform. The course was organized into four
thematic units and offered asynchronously; (2) Validation of the pedagogical content was
carried out by seven experts in the fields of nursing, medicine, nutrition, and pedagogy using
the Educational Content Validation Instrument in Health, aiming at improvement and future
updates; (3) The course was made available on the AVAProex/UFRN platform. Results and
discussion: The validation analysis showed that the overall index of the evaluated items
objectives, structure, and relevance—was satisfactory, with IVC = 0.83; CVC = 0.94; FVI =
0.87; and Kappa = 0.82, indicating strong agreement among the evaluators. However, the
parameters “adequate text size” and “clarifies doubts about the topic” were considered
unsatisfactory and were revised to enhance the teaching-learning process. These results
demonstrate that the course content is relevant and appropriate for the target audience and
learning objectives. Conclusions: The developed course proved to be a relevant educational
tool for improving nurses’ qualifications in the care of patients with BSS, meeting
pedagogical and technical quality standards. It is recommended that the course be expanded to
other health professions and that future studies assess its effectiveness in clinical practice.
