Population aging is, above all, a success story for public health policies, as well as for social and economic development. As we enter the 21st century, population aging will cause an increase in social and economic demands, and worldwide, the proportion of people aged 60 and over is growing faster than that of any other age group. The practice of physical activity is an important strategy for health promotion and brings countless benefits, especially for the elderly, among which stands out a greater longevity, reduced rates of morbidity and mortality, improved physiological capacity in patients with chronic diseases, maintenance of independence and autonomy, in addition to psychological benefits. In this context, we can observe that, as in other places, the city of Caicó (RN) has a significant number of individuals involved in the regular practice of physical activities, among these individuals the elderly stand out. It is worth emphasizing that actions directed by local diagnoses of health teams may, in addition to being planned, be possible to carry out and evaluate, highlighting the commitment of public managers to the active aging pacts recommended by the World Health Organization. Based on these perspectives, this study is relevant for investigating the motivational reasons for the practice of physical activity in the elderly, as well as identifying the factors associated with regularity and continuity, since, in Brazil, scientific investigations that address the reasons that lead elderly people are still scarce to practice physical activity regularly. This is a study involving 30 individuals aged 65 and over, characterized as epidemiological and cross-sectional. Data were collected in Basic Health Units of Primary Health Care in the municipality of Caicó (RN) in the period from March to April of the year 2020. It is concluded that the regular practice of physical activity by the elderly has become essential for a better quality of life, and that the results found in this research indicate that the female gender is more interested in these practices, that the main health conditions are associated with the presence of comorbidities such as heart disease, hypertension and lung diseases, and also, that the main Motivational reasons that lead the elderly to practice physical activity on a regular basis are mainly related to the search for health and sociability.
