TRANSLATION, CROSS-CULTURAL ADAPTATION AND PSYCHOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE ASTHMA SELF-MANAGEMENT QUESTIONNAIRE FOR THE BRAZILIAN POPULATION.Self-management. Asthma. Validation study. Questionnaire.
Introduction: Given the lack of health measurement instruments for asthma self-
management, there is a need to develop tools that can assist Brazilians diagnosed with
asthma in managing their condition effectively. Objectives: This study aimed to
translate, culturally adapt, and assess the measurement properties of the ASMQ-Brazil
for the Brazilian population. Methods: This exploratory methodological and
psychometric study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of UFRN (opinion
number 6.062.022). Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS (22.0) and JASP
(16.4), with a significance level set at 5%. International guidelines were used to guide
the design and implementation of the study's eight phases. For the instrument's
translation phase, the Delphi technique was employed, involving a multidisciplinary
committee of specialists. A pretest phase for cross-cultural adaptation was conducted,
during which a questionnaire was administered to patients meeting the eligibility
criteria. In the psychometric analysis of the tool, construct properties were assessed
using ASMQ-Brasil, ACT, and AQLQ(S). Content validity and instrument reliability
were also analyzed. Results: The Content Validity Index (CVI) was greater than 0.80
for all items, and internal consistency was satisfactory (α = 0.762). Furthermore, the
KMO test result was 0.756, and Bartlett’s test of sphericity yielded a χ² value of 257.903
with 120 degrees of freedom and a significance level of p < 0.001, indicating an
adequate fit of the data. Mean values for raw scores were 8.98 ± 2.95 and for
transformed scores, 56.17 ± 18.45. Correlation tests showed a very weak but statistically
significant correlation between ASMQ and ACT (r = 0.043, p = 0.704) and a very weak,
non-significant correlation between ASMQ-Brasil and AQLQ(S) (r = 0.043, p = 0.704).
Conclusion: ASMQ-Brasil is a valid, reliable, and accessible health measurement tool
for assessing asthma self-management in the Brazilian population.
