SUMMARY:

Neural oscillations are an ubiquitous feature of brain activity. Their potential functions range from parsing spiking activity into meaningful units to facilitating efficient information transmission across different brain networks. To achieve these functions, brain rhythms either interact across areas, synchronizing at a common frequency, or couple locally employing two different frequencies. Importantly, mounting evidence highlights that brain oscillations depend upon bodily rhythms, particularly respiration. Yet, we still ignore if respiration-related brain oscillations aid neuronal communication across the brain, if they are conserved across mammalian species, how they are generated, or what functional significance they may have. Thus, this thesis addresses these questions by 1) introducing a novel methodology to study cross-frequency interactions and their impact on long-range synchronization. 2) Demonstrating the influence of respiration on gamma synchronization across different species, highlighting its importance in coordinating neural activity. 3) Delving into the mechanisms and functions of respiration-driven gamma oscillations in the primary olfactory cortex. And 4) Exploring how respiration influences neuronal communication and sensory information transmission in the canonical olfactory pathway. Together, we offer new insights into the relationship between neural oscillations, respiration, and cognitive functions, advancing our understanding of brain dynamics and communication mechanisms
