SUMMARY:
The assumed connection between consciousness and language impulsed the desire to understand the social development of thought. The Axial Age (≥800-200 BC) denotes a turning point for cognisance, which indicates that human literacy, a language product, explains the mentality changes in this period. Semantic analyses of literary sources pointed to fluctuations in introspection relating to human societies’ rising and fall. Simultaneously, structural examinations of discourse attested the connection between the maturation of speech features associated with schizophrenia and the Axial Age. These investigations encouraged the hypotheses that introspection varies according to social welfare and that this semantic feature is somehow related to structural traits of speech. Using Latent Semantic Analysis and the software SpeechGraphs, we estimate the similitude to “introspection” compared to literary texts spanning ≥ 4500 years, from the Bronze Age (≥2500-1000 BC) to Contemporary Times (up to 2014). Additionally, we present the correlation between the semantic feature and long-range recurrence throughout historical time. Our results exhibit that introspection’s historical content is intrinsically dependent on human societies’ progress and well-being.
