SUMMARY:

Contemporary lifestyle has impacted on mental health and wellbeing, according to World Health Organization, often due to dysregulation of psychophysiological mechanisms of stress response. In this context, non-pharmacological interventions that aim to manage it has been used, usually that ones that integrates mind and body, such as mindfulness. This meditative practice, that has been implicated in reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms, is usually described as a set of attentional skills to present moment experience on purpose, acceptance and kindness, and can be expressed as a state or a trait. To evaluate the effects of mindfulness trait and a brief intervention (3 consecutive days) based in mindfulness in healthy young subjects (n=40) we analyzed measures of anxiety (STAI), affect (PANAS), stress (PSS and plasma cortisol), and mindfulness (SMS and FFMQ). Subjects were classified in Low/High mindfulness trait by k-means clustering, where High Trait individuals showed lower levels of anxiety and perceived stress. Further, sample was allocated to a control (n=20, painting activities) or mindfulness (n=20, meditation) group. We found a reduction in negative affect, anxiety state, perceived stress and cortisol (so-called distress measures) only in mindfulness group. Moderated mediation analysis showed that the meditation-induced increase in state mindfulness mediated the increase in positive affect and decrease in perceived stress and cortisol, but for anxiety measures this mediation effect only occur in individuals with High Mindfulness Trait. Together, these results suggest that mindfulness trait is associated with low levels of distress and that a brief mindfulness-based intervention is enough to reduce these measures.
