SUMMARY:
Otter longicaudis (Olfers, 1818) is a carnivorous mammal with interdigital membranes.
on the toes that allow an excellent adaptation to the semi-aquatic lifestyle.
Representatives of the Mustelidae family and Lutrinae subfamily. L.longicaudis has one of the wider geographic distributions,
ranging from northern Mexico to Argentina. It is a aloof animal and difficult to see,
as they generally have nocturnal habits and twilight, mainly in the Northeast of Brazil.
One of the ways to study the habitat of the species is through indirect observation,
along with traces such as carcasses, tracks, latrines, anal mucus and feces.
Although the distribution of the species is considered by the IUCN
(International Union for Conservation of Nature) as “Insufficient Data”, recent studies describe that the species
is classified as "Near Threatened" in Northeastern Brazil and “Vulnerable” in the Atlantic Forest domain due
to the high level of habitat degradation. Causes that threaten otters are conflicts with fishermen and
psyculture owners and shrimp farming, consequently the deforestation of riverbanks. In this way,
the demonstration of the use of habitat in areas of occurrence of L. longicaudis, such as places of latrines,
passage places and feeding places in the eight river basins that have already were recorded the presence
of the species in Rio Grande do Norte, based on the analysis of photographic records from the Lontra Viva
Project database, in the period in 2011 to 2020, found that the Neotropical Otter makes constant use of these
habitats, preferring environments with greater protection and by places with less anthropization, evidencing the i
mportance of maintaining the integrity of regional ecosystems for the preservation of species.
There are several species of mustelids that interact with fishing populations throughout the world
causing conflicts between humans vs animals, however, between the species that occur in Brazil,
there are few studies that address this issue.
