SUMMARY:

The seven sea turtle species on the planet are in a fragile population status and demand for conservation care. This dissertation, composed of three parts, deals with nest predation, one of the main natural threats to sea turtle populations. Here, we seek to characterize nest predations in a protected area on the coast of RN and to identify global strategies for mitigation of predation and their possible application on the Brazilian coast. In the first part, we found the prevalence of carnivorous mammals as predators and better efficiency of non-lethal mitigation methods. In the second part, we did a survey on the predation of nests in Barreira do Inferno, Parnamirin, RN, Brazil, using historical data from TAMAR between the seasons from 2005/2006 to 2017/2018. Predatory activity in the area has been shown to be high (over 50%) in recent seasons, with the fox being the most important predator species, followed by the armadillo. The third part consists of an experiment, in the Barreira do Inferno area, where five different methods to mitigate predation were tested: using only the guide and stake, galvanized canvas, pepper powder, flag and control. During the experiment, we managed to decrease the percentage of predation to 33%. We observed that the flag and the canvas showed less predation by the fox. In addition, the fox's visitations decreased throughout the nest's life, in contrast to the excavation and predation that are more intense in the post-laying and hatching of the nest. This research highlights the importance of continuing to study mitigation methods. The use of the screen and flag methods together should be considered, the latter being applied close to the nest hatch.
