SUMMARY:

Insects perform many important functions in nature that help maintain balance in
ecosystems. Muscomorpha diptera would be no different; they contribute directly to
the ecosystem balance by accelerating the recycling of organic matter and allowing
nutrients to be reused. This study aimed to assess the attractiveness of different
substrates on the assembly of sarcosaprophagous diptera in a preserved fragment of
the Atlantic Forest. The collections were carried out in the conservation unit Parque
das Dunas de Natal - RN in July 2019. The insects were collected using suspended
traps made from a pet bottle, which were bait with five different types of substrates:
fermented mango and cashew, chicken liver and decomposed fish, and fresh human
feces. A total of 424 adults from eight families were collected. Calliphorida was the
most representative family with 44% of specimens collected, followed by Phoridae
(24%), Ulidiidae (12%) and Drosophilidae (11%), the other families, Sarcophagidae,
Muscidae, Micropezidae and Fannidae correspond to 9% of all individuals. Among
the substrates, chicken liver and human feces were the most attractive substrates
representing 46% and 29% of adult flies, respectively, while the substrates that were
less efficient in the locality were cashew (15%), fish (6%) and mango with 4% of
adults. The results also revealed that Lucia eximia, a more abundant species in the
area with 42.7% of the specimens captured, showed a strictly scavenger behavior,
since it was collected exclusively from substrates of animal origin. This result further
confirms the forensic potential of the species for the state of Rio Grande do Norte,
Brazil.
