RESUMO:

The Zika and Chikungunya viruses are emerging arboviruses and important human pathogens. Infection by these viruses causes common clinical conditions characterized by fever, headache, rash, nausea, vomiting, myalgia, arthralgia and, occasionally, neurological manifestations, such as acute limb weakness. The difficulty in accurately diagnosing these viruses delays the targeting of preventive care and treatment in cases of severe disease, increasing the chances of patients progressing to chronic form or developing neurological manifestations such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, which are much more damaging to the patients and costly for the health system. This research has as main theme the proposition of an innovative methodology in the laboratory identification of arboviruses Zika and Chikungunya using tools of biospectroscopy. We used infrared spectroscopy by attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) associated with Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which was able to classify in samples categories infected with the Zika and Chikungunya viruses, differentiating those that have the viruses of those considered healthy, with satisfactory sensitivity and specificity for use as a diagnostic method. The results suggest that the ATR-FTIR biospectroscopy can be proposed as a promising new field of research that could be used in the near future as a diagnostic tool to detect the presence of these viruses in biological samples of serum and whole blood, besides differentiating the Chikungunya fever and the Zika fever of other arboviruses causing epidemics in Brazil, such as Dengue.
