RESUMO:
Myiasis is a parasitic disease characterized by infestation of diptera larvae in vertebrate hosts and can occur from the deposition of fly eggs or larvae in natural cavities or openings in the skin, from scratches, burns to necrotic lesions. Underreporting and lack of knowledge on the part of patients and health professionals makes it difficult to map the main species that cause the disease, making it impossible to develop a possible action in the prevention of the appearance of more patients with this parasitosis. There is a common and frequent report of health professionals about many patients carrying fly larvae in the body, despite the scarcity of reports. Therefore, this work aimed to know the number of cases and of the main species of flies that cause myiasis in the population of Natal. A survey of myiasis cases occurred between the years 2010 to 2017 in some health care units in the city of Natal, where 7 cases were reported in the records of the dressing rooms and, at the same time, the larvae were collected from new cases appeared in the period of analysis of the medical records for the species to be identified. Two new cases of myiasis occurred during the development of this work. In one case, the larvae were identified as belonging to the species Cochliomyia hominivorax and in the other case, the larvae were identified as belonging to the family Sarcophagidae. At the end of the visits, awareness-raising lectures were given to health professionals and the availability of an informative and didactic booklet on myiasis to inform and demystify misconceptions about the disease.
