RESUMO:

Infection with hemosporids has been studied in several parts of the world, as this is
considered an important factor in the decline of populations of several species of birds. The
present work was carried out at ESEC-Seridó, located in the hinterland of Rio Grande do
Norte. The collections were carried out in two seasons, dry and rainy during the years of
2013 and 2014. Fog networks were used to capture the birds and blood collection and later
laboratory techniques for extraction and amplification of DNA and diagnosis of presence of
hemosporids. Of all 779 birds were sampled, comprising all of 9 families and 20 species.
The total prevalence obtained in the two years of sampling was 54%, with no difference
between dry and rainy seasons. The environmental conditions of the ESEC-Seridó in the
years of collection were favorable for the development of some of the vectors of
hemosporidioses. The presence of ectoparasites in birds was related to the presence of
hemosporidioses, in which birds infected with hemosporids did not present ectoparasite
infestation. The habitat of birds greatly influences their appearance of life. Therefore, both
the trophic guild and the environment that the birds frequented had a relation with the
infection by hemosporids. In this way, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the
prevalence of hemosporids in Caatinga birds present in the Estação Ecológica do Seridó.
