SUMMARY:

Kitaev honeycomb model realizes a quantum spin liquid where spin degrees of freedom are fractionalized into itinerant
Majorana fermions and localized vortices. The entanglement between these particles may be used to perform fault-tolerant
topological quantum computation. There is a hunt for Kitaev materials. $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is expected to realize the model,
but there is no consensus whether a quantum spin liquid phase has been observed. To help identify this phase, we propose
electrical tests that detect vortices in Kitaev materials. The techniques studied in this project can also be explored to
manipulate the Ising anyons in the material. We will use the extended Kitaev model, which more realistically describes Kitaev
materials
