SUMMARY:

Parasocial relationships (PSRs) are unilateral ties formed between celebrities and fans, in which the fan perceives the celebrity as a friend or family (or even a romantic) figure, although they do not know them personally. In the evolutionary context, our ancestors developed mental mechanisms that favored social interactions, but there was no selective pressure to distinguish between fictional and real people since they were never exposed to mass media. For this reason, some people react to media figures as if they were real people. The development of media and the Internet has significantly increased opportunities for the formation of PSRs, leading to the necessity to study the possible impacts resulting from these relationships with regard to individuals' mental health. Based on this, this work aims to characterize the individuals most likely to form a high-intensity PSR, taking into account levels of depression, anxiety, stress, loneliness, attachment style and the quality of real social relationships. Furthermore, we intend to analyze, from an experimental approach, whether PSRs are similar to a close interpersonal relationship with regard to the effect on the subjective well-being of fans. The results will help to understand the motivations for persuing PSRs, and whether they constitute good tools for the mental adjustment of fans.
