In the last decades the studies about sexual selection in the human species have turned their attention to individual aspects, among which are self esteem, personality and adult attachment styles. Self esteem can work as a social thermometer indicating to the individual when he needs to adjust his behavior in front of his social group. Personality is the set of psychological characteristics, which has a genetic base and are influenced by the developmental environment of the individual. Attachment can be defined as a set of behaviors that allows the development of emotional bonds. These three characteristics need to be better understood within the mating market. In this sense, the present study aims to investigate the relationship between self esteem, basic dimensions of attachment styles and personality, in the romantic relationships of heterosexual and non-heterosexual individuals, as well as their role in relationship satisfaction. Until now, we recruited 205 individuals and they answer questionnaires about individual differences and mate choice. Our initial results show that differences in preferences for characteristics in a romantic partner are influenced by individuals sex and sexual orientation. Moreover, relationship satisfaction seems to influence self esteem and to be influenced by personality traits that the couple presents. Finally, the attachment related avoidance dimension seems to explain the greater variation in relationship satisfaction.
