There are several transformations that have been taking place in recent decades in the world of work. These changes have led to consequences that are not alwayspositive for the worker and for society. Hospitals are complex organizations thatoffer medium and high complexity health services. The professionals who work in this service live daily with work overload, lack of personnel, long shifts, shortage ofinputs and equipment, inadequate physical structures, insufficient beds, overcrowding, wage gap, fragility in relationships, among others. The objective ofthis work is to know the profile of leave due to illness among workers at a publichospital in the State of Alagoas, with a view to contributing to the promotion ofworkers' health. This is a descriptive, quantitative study. The target populationconsisted of all hospital workers who, from May 2020 to December 2021, hadleave due to illness registered in the Cadastral Information System of the General Hospital of the State of Alagoas, which has sociodemographic, clinical andoccupational information on workers. Data were tabulated in Excel software andanalyzed via JASP 0.16.4 (JASP TEAM, 2023). Inferential tests were performed toinvestigate the association between the number of leaves per ICD-10 group, usingthe Kruskal-Walis test, considering the ICD-10 groups as factors and the number ofleaves as the dependent variable. This test was applied due to the asymmetricnature of the data (Kolmogorov-Smirnov, p < 0.05), as well as the χ² test wasperformed, with a significance level of 5% (p < 0.05), when cells presented a number of observations smaller than 5, Fisher's exact test was used. The resultsshowed a high number of absences due to illness among health workers at theinstitution, with high rates of absenteeism due to illness in the nursing category andamong non-permanent workers. With regard to diseases, those of themusculoskeletal system were more frequent. Knowing the causes of absenteeismdue to illness associated with health workers provides subsidies to establishprevention and health promotion strategies at work. It is believed that the health ofthese workers is neglected, which is also reflected in the quality of care provided tothe patient. Knowing the profile of the worker's illness is essential, since it allowsthe situational diagnosis, contributes to the recognition of risk factors and helps in intervention strategies aimed at improving working conditions, quality of life andreducing work leave .
