SUMMARY:

This work is dedicated to investigating the history and memory of the Professora Lígia
Navarro State School (1936-1963), located at Praia de Pitangui in Extremoz/RN. The
creation of the institution fits within the context of the establishment of Fishermen's Colonies
on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Norte in the 1920s and 1930s; thus, it is clear that the
fishermen's organization favored the creation of the school. Over the decades, the school
operated in different buildings until it got its own headquarters, but it suffered collapses and
fires (2021–2022), which destroyed its structure and collection. The research started from
the observation that the school community was unaware of the history of the institution's first
decades of operation, not even having information about the patron who gave the school its
name. In more than eight decades of existence, the lack of knowledge of these facts,
combined with the total destruction of its physical structure, reinforced the desire to
investigate the history and memory of this asset that is part of the construction of the
educational identity of Pitangui. These events of absence and tragedy motivated the
development of the research, which involved discussing local history, oral history, and
heritage education to support the writing and preparation of the work. The categories of
heritage, identity, memory, and cultural assets permeated the writing process, which initially
focused on presenting the historical context of the city of Extremoz and Praia de Pitangui in
the first half of the 20th century, with an emphasis on the structure of the fishing community.
Through the traces found during the research, it addressed the creation and operation of the
Isolated School of Pitangui, later named Escola Professora Lígia Navarro. It also drew on the
memories of students/teachers who witnessed this early period of the institution and, as a
result of the investigation process, presented a heritage education proposal to be applied in
history teaching both in the middle school and high school classes. Thinking about the
school's journey as a cultural asset and community heritage, a didactic e-book was produced
with workshops addressing memory, heritage, and local identity, encouraging reflection on
the school's role in community building and citizenship development. Creating the material
itself responds to the challenges faced by history teachers who do not have teaching materials
that cover local history topics.
