SUMMARY:

Science museums have become important non-formal educational spaces, contributing to science communication, the expansion of teaching and learning experiences, and initial teacher education by providing pedagogical experiences in diverse educational contexts. In this context, the present study investigates the contributions of the Professor Hiram Diogo Fernandes Museum of Morphological Sciences at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (MCM-UFRN) to initial teacher education, focusing on the activities carried out by undergraduate teacher education students during the Supervised Teaching Internship II. The research is based on the understanding that non-formal educational environments provide opportunities to integrate scientific and pedagogical knowledge, fostering the construction of teacher identity and the development of more critical and reflective educational practices. This study adopts a qualitative and quantitative approach and is characterized as a single-case study, with the MCM-UFRN serving as the unit of analysis. Data from the period between the first semester of 2023 and the first semester of 2026 were analyzed. The participants were undergraduate teacher education students and former students who completed their supervised internship at the museum, acting as mediators in the educational activities developed by the institution. Data collection involved document analysis, along with other instruments planned for the subsequent stages of the investigation. Partial results indicate that the MCM hosted 228 interns between 2023 and 2026, including 84 in 2023, 80 in 2024, 54 in 2025, and 10 in 2026. The sample consisted of students from the undergraduate teacher education programs in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Pedagogy, Physics, Visual Arts, and Theater, with a predominance of Biological Sciences students. Regarding the motivations for choosing the MCM as an internship site, the main reasons identified were the opportunity to experience a non-formal educational environment, previous familiarity with the museum, and the possibility of expanding their knowledge. The analysis of the results highlights the relevance of the museum as a learning environment, providing interns with experiences related to science mediation, educational activity planning, and the integration of theory and practice. Furthermore, the museum fosters the development of communication skills, autonomy, and critical thinking, contributing to the construction of teaching knowledge. Thus, this research seeks to strengthen discussions on the role of science museums in teacher education and to enhance the recognition of non-formal educational spaces as legitimate and valuable contexts for initial teacher education.
