SUMMARY:

Sea turtles play an important ecological role in coastal ecosystems; however, they are increasingly impacted by anthropogenic activities, as reflected in the frequent records of strandings and deaths of these animals. In this context, environmental awareness among coastal communities, as well as scientific outreach in schools, becomes essential for the conservation of these threatened species. Monitoring strandings provides relevant data on the main risk factors and enables educational actions aimed at mitigating anthropogenic impacts.The present study aims to analyze the stranding profile of sea turtles along the eastern coast of Rio Grande do Norte in order to support the development of educational material directed at coastal and fishing communities. For this purpose, records obtained by the Center for Environmental Studies and Monitoring (CEMAM) between 2015 and 2026 were used, covering the coastal stretch between the municipalities of São Bento do Norte and Baía Formosa, Rio Grande do Norte.The analyzed spreadsheets include information on biological, morphological, and occurrence data, as well as evidence of anthropogenic interaction. These data were analyzed, and the results contributed to contextualizing the development of an educational booklet to be distributed in fishing communities. The target audience will include fishermen and fisherwomen, shellfish gatherers, students from different educational levels, and teachers.So far, 554 stranding records have been analyzed. The most frequent species was Chelonia mydas (73.3%), followed by Caretta caretta (11.4%), Lepidochelys olivacea (7.6%), and Eretmochelys imbricata (7.2%). A predominance of juvenile individuals was observed (67.4%), especially of C. mydas, while adults accounted for 32.1% of the records and hatchlings for 0.4%.Most individuals were found dead (91.5%), and records were concentrated mainly in the municipalities of Nísia Floresta, Extremoz, and Natal. Evidence of interaction with fishing activities, ingestion of solid waste, and collisions with vessels were also recorded.The predominance of juvenile C. mydas in the records suggests the importance of the eastern coast of Rio Grande do Norte for the development of this species, especially in coastal feeding areas. Based on the main results obtained, educational material will be developed addressing the sea turtle species recorded, their external morphological characteristics, physiology, and the main threats to which they are subjected, including mitigation measures. The importance of conserving the environments used throughout their life cycle will also be highlighted. The material will use accessible language appropriate for the target audience.
