SUMMARY:

Introduction: Communication is a fundamental human right, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) represents an essential assistive technology for the inclusion of people with disabilities (PwD) in healthcare. Objective: To describe the development and implementation of an AAC strategy for prenatal care of deaf individuals, and to assess medical students’ perceptions and reactions regarding its use. Method: A quasi-experimental, mixed-methods study was conducted with 18 students from the Obstetrics and Gynecology internship. The intervention was implemented through theoretical and practical workshops featuring role-play simulations, which included the development and use of the Communication Book for Deaf People in Prenatal Consultations. Quantitative data were analyzed using a Linear Mixed Model, and qualitative data through thematic analysis. Results: Responses revealed previous lack of knowledge about AAC and difficulties performing anamnesis and physical exams with PwD. Students acknowledged gaps in medical training and the need to develop communicational competencies. There was a unanimously positive reaction (100% rated the experience as “happy” or “very happy”) and a significant increase in self-perceived competence, particularly regarding confidence and communication skills. Conclusion: The andragogical AAC-based strategy proved effective and reproducible in promoting the development of inclusive and communicational competencies, reinforcing the importance of training approaches that foster comprehensive and equitable care for people with disabilities in medical education.
