Geodesic Domes in the teaching of Geometry
geodesic domes; Platonic solids; teaching sequence
This work aims to propose a didactic sequence on the use of geodesic domes in the construction of marketable objects for 2nd-year high school classes. To this end, we will present a brief overview of the history of geometry, Platonic solids, and geodesic domes. We will also address the derivations of the formulas for calculating the edges, area, and volume of a 2V frequency geodesic dome that uses a regular icosahedron as its matrix polyhedron. These deductions were made using the GeoGebra program. For the didactic sequence, we suggest using Project-Based Learning and Maker Culture methodologies. To assist teachers in guiding the production of geodesic dome-shaped objects, we describe the construction of a lampshade and a food warmer using this shape. Thus, we hope that this work will help mathematics teachers contextualize their geometry lessons in a practical, motivating, and meaningful way for their students.
