SUMMARY:

Disability is a multidimensional phenomenon resulting from the interaction between health conditions and contextual barriers that restrict functionality and full inclusion in society. With the accelerated aging of the population, the intersection between advanced age and disability gains centrality in public health, as older adults face the cumulative effects of physical and attitudinal barriers, frequently exacerbated by persistent socio-territorial inequalities and the scarcity of standardized epidemiological data. In view of this problem, this thesis aims to analyze the social participation of older adults with disabilities from the perspective of the biopsychosocial model of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), contemplating its epidemiological magnitude, the factors associated with social support and social participation, and the territorial resources directed toward its promotion. The investigation is structured into three studies comprising four scientific articles. The first study consists of the development of a protocol and the conduction of a systematic review with meta-analysis (Articles I and II) on the prevalence of disability in older adults in Latin America. The review included 37 studies, totaling 633,747 participants, and the meta-analysis gathered 29 estimates, with a pooled prevalence of 25.3% (95% CI: 20.6%–30.0%) and high heterogeneity among the studies (I²  = 99.97%). Subgroup analyses and the deepening of the discussion are ongoing. The second study, presented in Article III, analyzed data from the National Health Survey (PNS 2019) on factors associated with low social support and low social participation among Brazilian older adults with disabilities, identifying a higher occurrence of these outcomes among individuals with lower education, without a partner, with poorer self-rated health, and with multiple domains of disability, in addition to specific associations according to sex, age, smoking, use of assistive devices, and multimorbidity. The third study, presented in Article IV, is in the phase of mapping and characterizing spaces, programs, and initiatives that promote social participation for people with disabilities in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, considering their territorial distribution, operational characteristics, and accessibility resources, with a view to subsidizing social prescribing practices. It is expected that the body of studies will expand knowledge on disability in aging and contribute to the planning of policies and strategies aimed at promoting social participation, inclusion, and the reduction of inequalities.
