SUMMARY:

Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) is based on the availability, access, utilization, and stability of food to meet dietary needs and preferences for an active and healthy life, with negative impacts that are even more consistent depending on geographical and socioeconomic contexts. There is a clear need to discuss food and nutritional insecurity during pregnancy due to increased nutritional demands, especially for pregnant women in unfavorable contexts in developing, low- and middle-income countries, as well as in the scenario of adolescent pregnancy. Given this, this study aims to analyze the relationship between FNS and socioeconomic and clinical factors in pregnant women from municipalities in the Trairi Region of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. This is a cross-sectional observational study, with data collection conducted between 2017 and 2019 among 100 pregnant women, consisting of 50 adolescents (13-18 years old) and 50 young adults (23-28 years old). Participants were assessed for food security using the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale (ELCSA) and classified as "Secure" or "Insecure." The food insecurity groups were compared regarding socioeconomic factors and health measures using appropriate statistical tests and binary logistic regression. The adolescent group proved to be more vulnerable to food insecurity. Food insecurity was associated with lower educational levels, worse economic status, reports of hunger during childhood, underweight status, and a higher proportion of women reporting feeling sad or depressed. The regression model showed that adolescents have a 4 times higher chance of food insecurity than adults; total hemoglobin levels also showed a trend of association, as did the adolescent age group and a lower chance of food insecurity among pregnant women with a very good economic situation during childhood. To conclude the work, an in-depth discussion of the results is planned, through a critical analysis that will seek to understand the relationship between food and nutrition security levels and the various factors affecting pregnant women in the studied territory.
