SUMMARY:

Introduction: Interprofessional collaboration has become established globally as a proposal for reorienting the health promotion model, calling on health systems to rethink their organization in order to overcome the fragmented, uniprofessional, and disjointed logic that has become established in the history of health care. However, barriers and obstacles to its consolidation still persist, such that professional councils and teaching associations, professional representation entities, play an important role in strengthening the interprofessional logic within the health sector. However, debates about the role of these bodies in the discussion of interprofessionalism are still incipient, which leads to the need to involve them in discussions so that they can be agents inducing the desired transformation. Objective: To examine the role of professional representation bodies, health professions teaching bodies, and scientific and cultural development bodies for professionals and students in the debate for the advancement of interprofessional collaboration in the process of reorienting health training and work. Method: This qualitative and exploratory research was divided into two stages. The first stage involved documentary research using documents that guide the training and practice of Brazilian health professions. The second stage consisted of interviews with representatives of the bodies/institutions that regulate/guide the training and practice of health professions in Brazil. Critical discourse analysis was used to analyze the data in both stages, and content analysis was also employed for some of the results in the first stage. The research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital. Results: The summaries of the research results are presented in the form of scientific articles. Two articles were proposed for the documentary study stage. The first, based on critical discourse analysis applied to documents regulating professional practices, along with documents guiding the training of health categories, revealed elements of proximity and distance between the regulatory discourse and the development of collaborative interprofessional action. In the second article, which used content analysis and took the framework of interprofessional collaborative competencies as analytical categories, it was found that national regulatory documents are similar to international competency matrices, but still in a disjointed manner. The second stage presents a systematization of the discourse of representatives of professional organizations regarding interprofessional collaboration. Conclusion: The regulation of professional practice and training is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that needs to keep pace with social changes, as it is influenced by and influences the social context in which it is embedded. Furthermore, for there to be progress in the effective implementation of interprofessional collaboration, it is necessary for the regulatory body of health professions to engage in a real change in professional culture in order to overcome the fragmented model of health production that is still in force.
