SUMMARY:

This study aims to analyze knowledge production regarding the factors related to higher education that contribute to the psychological distress of undergraduate students. The research is based on a scoping review, providing an overview of the topic by identifying the main academic, institutional, and sociocultural aspects that impact students' mental health. Several studies indicate that the competitiveness of the academic environment, performance pressure, and the lack of emotional and institutional support are elements that foster the emergence of mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. Additionally, academic overload, the constant demand for productivity, and uncertainty about future professional prospects are factors that exacerbate students' psychological stress. The adopted methodology involves the careful selection of scientific articles and specialized literature on the subject, using recognized academic databases. The analysis of studies reveals that students from different fields of knowledge face distinct challenges but share common difficulties related to higher education. The absence of effective institutional policies for psychological support and academic well-being contributes to the worsening of mental distress. The impact of socioeconomic vulnerability is also a relevant element, as students in financially precarious situations are at greater risk of psychological distress due to the accumulation of academic and personal difficulties. The findings of this research reinforce the need for more robust institutional policies to mitigate the impacts of higher education on students' mental health. Strategies such as expanding psychological support services, revising workloads, and implementing curricular flexibility can contribute to promoting academic well-being. It is concluded that addressing psychological distress in higher education requires integrated actions among universities, students, and academic administrators to build a healthier and more welcoming environment for the formation of future professionals.
