SUMMARY:

Many women of reproductive age say that the luteal phase is a delicate and peculiar time, as it is a period when they experience hormonal fluctuations that trigger physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms, negatively affecting their affective, social and occupational environment. Such discomfort, which manifests itself weeks before the menstrual period and is relieved after menstruation begins, are clinical characteristics of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), also popularly known as premenstrual tension (PMT). Faced with the numerous treatments offered to improve symptoms, women have preferred more natural approaches, through physical exercise, proper nutrition, vitamins and supplements. Thus, among natural interventions, curcumin stands out as a promising alternative for women who are more sensitive to PMS symptoms. With this in mind, the aim is to synthesize the scientific evidence on the effectiveness of curcumin supplementation in women sensitive to PMS symptoms, by means of a systematic review and meta-analysis. This study is a systematic review registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD420251022573), developed in accordance with the guidelines described by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews PRISMA-P. The electronic databases selected for the search were PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science-Main Collection, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Studies and Clinical Trials, in December 2024. In addition, 623 bibliographic references were found, of which eleven studies were selected for full reading. After careful screening, six articles were included in the current Systematic Review and two studies in the meta-analysis. Thus, through the scientific findings, it is concluded that curcumin has a potent effect on the symptoms of PMS.
