SUMMARY:

Currently, the relevance of safe care practices is a major challenge in hospital care. Patient safety is understood as a set of actions aimed at protecting patients against risks, adverse events, which are incidents that result in harm to health and unnecessary harm during care in health services. It is also defined as the reduction, to an acceptable minimum, of the risk of unnecessary harm associated with health care. The importance of safe care practices is recognized as a fundamental proposal for health care associated with the quality of the service provided and a firm and visible institutional commitment to all latent situations, visible or not, of danger. This study aimed to analyze safe care practices and their coping from the perspective of patients and their caregivers/family members. This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study. In this sense, the research in question sought to understand how safe care practices occur and how they are coped with from the perspective of patients and their caregivers/family members. That said, we sought to identify the internal determinants that represent obstacles to patient safety and to understand patients' perceptions of their role as a tool for patient safety care. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews and had the participation of 30 patients/family members. Data analysis was performed in three phases: pre-analysis, exploration of the material and data treatment, inference and interpretation, following Bardin's (2016) framework for developing content analysis. The qualitative analysis software Atlas Ti was used to assist in the organization and analysis of data. The research met all ethical requirements, fully respecting the determinations of Resolution No. 466/2012. The results obtained allow us to identify that the lack of adequate infrastructure is a determinant that represents obstacles to patient safety, as well as the difficulties faced by caregivers/family members in getting to the hospital, since they mention the presence of a companion as an important factor for patient safety, followed by fall prevention. The study indicates that patients and caregivers/family members perceive their role as a care tool when seeking information, demonstrating that the search for information represents an important strategy for enabling care and empowerment, followed by fall prevention, participation in care, and effective communication with the team. They recognize medical explanations about procedures, correct administration of medications, reception, and daily care by the team as care practices. Infrastructure (adequacy of bathrooms) is indicated as care practices that need improvement, as well as nutrition and cultural diversity.
